In pictures: Exploring Ke Ga Lighthouse at low tide

Located on Hon Ba Island, around 500 metres from the mainland, Ke Ga Lighthouse in Lam Dong Province is one of the tallest and oldest lighthouses in Viet Nam.

Visitors fortunate enough to arrive during periods of exceptionally low tide are treated to the spectacular experience of strolling along a sandy causeway that emerges from the sea to connect the mainland to the island.

Situated along the coast of Binh Thuan, Ke Ga Lighthouse stands on a small island about 500 metres offshore and is recognised as one of the oldest of its kind in Viet Nam and Southeast Asia.

Having withstood more than a century of historical upheaval and the harsh conditions of the sea, the 35-metre-high tower continues to guide vessels passing through the area.

On ordinary days, visitors can only reach the lighthouse by speedboat or by hiring a traditional basket boat from local fishermen. However, when the tide recedes to unusually low levels — approximately twice a year — the sea appears to part, revealing a smooth stretch of white sand that links the mainland directly to the island.

This low-tide phenomenon is one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles. Not everyone who visits Ke Ga has the opportunity to witness or walk along this ephemeral pathway, which appears and disappears with the tides.

Walking barefoot on the damp sand, with the open sea and ocean breeze all around, creates a profound sense of freedom and awe at nature’s grandeur.

Surrounding the historic tower are striking rock formations, seemingly scattered at random, forming a rugged barrier against the open sea.
