A crew of 400 seamen from the US, Australia and Japan will join locals and authorities in Da Nang in a range of community service events under the programme from June 6-15 to exchange and provide medical training, support medical facilities repair, as well as taking part in cultural exchanges and sporting events.

A series of seminars on emergency care and patient stabilisation, battlefield trauma, medical care and rehabilitation for burned patients, basic resuscitation, infection control, drugs and toxicology and paediatric cardiology will also be held.

The 14,000 tonne displacement ship is one of three Osumi class amphibious transport vessels under the JMSDF. It measures 178m long with a beam of 25.8 and can travel at a maximum speed of 22 knots.

The next destination for Kunisaki will be Cambodia and the Philippines.

Launched after the 2004 tsunami devastated many regions in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Partnership Programme has implemented a range of disaster relief operations, while providing humanitarian and medical assistance to regional countries.

Since its first deployment in 2006 by the US Navy, it has provided medical services to 250,000 patients and performed more than 170 projects in 14 Asia-Pacific countries.
