Additional aid worth VND200 billion given to pandemic-hit workers

The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) has approved the provision of an additional one million “social welfare bags” worth total VND200 billion (US$8.8 million) to help COVID-19 pandemic-hit trade union members and workers.

The welfare bags will be allocated to 25 localities and sectors where the epidemic has severely affected the lives of millions of workers and employees, including Ho Chi Minh City (200,000 bags), Binh Duong (150,000), Dong Nai (100,000) and Hanoi (100,000).

Since the beginning of the fourth outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, trade unions at all levels have spent a total of VND5.062 trillion (nearly US$223 million) to support their members, workers, frontline forces and on funds for epidemic prevention and control.

So far, around 3.5 million trade unions members and employees have received aid through various programmes put forward by the trade unions.

* Since early May 2021, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Committees from central to local level, their member organisations and the National Vaccine Fund have received the donations, including money and objects, worth a total of over VND19.310 trillion (nearly US$850 million).

Accordingly,VFF Committees and their member organisations have allocated VND8.656 trillion to support the localities, agencies, hospitals and frontline forces in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic; transferring donations to the Vaccine Fund; and providing over 3.3 million gifts and social welfare bags to workers facing difficulties due to the pandemic.

Over VND4.449 trillion from the National Vaccine Fund has been used under the Government’s direction.

* A webinar was held by the Nguoi Lao Dong (Labourer) Newspaper on October 1 to discuss the “labour human resources for Ho Chi Minh City and neighbouring provinces after the pandemic”, featuring the participation of several provinces, cities, associations, enterprises and leaders from various departments and central ministries.

According to Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Van Hoi, in order to fulfill the dual goal, it is crucial to continue accelerating vaccination as well as making the necessary policies to ensure safe production for workers in the near future.
