Typhoon Rammasun weakens into depression

Nhan Dan – According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), after entering the border region between Vietnam and China, typhoon Rammasun has weakened into a tropical depression.

As of 1am on July 20, the depression’s centre was at 22.8 degrees north latitude, 104.7 degrees east longitude and the strongest winds in its eye were less than 40kph.

Due to the impact of the tropical depression, the Gulf of Tonkin will continue to see strong winds and rough seas. Heavy rains are forecast in the northern mountainous and midland provinces, while northern mountainous region may suffer from flash floods and landslides.

Floods from 3-6m in the upstream and 2-4m downstream are forecast in the Hong-Thai Binh river system.

On July 19, Deputy Prime Minister, Hoang Trung Hai inspected disaster prevention work in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province and asked the province to implement a set plan to prevent damage from heavy rains and landslides in residential areas and coal mines, and to ensure production safety and daily activities of local residents.

The typhoon hit Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province, uprooting and breaking over 200 trees, blowing away 50 roofs, making four temporary accomodation units collapse and knocking down three electricity poles. In Hai Ha district, around 50 trees were knocked down, 14 house roofs were blown off and a Vinaphone antenna pole fell down. Total damage is estimated at around VND2 billion.
