The event was held by the Vietnam Institute of Biotechnology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) with the participation of hundreds of scientists, experts and managers from both at home and abroad.

Prof. Dr. Phan Ngoc Minh, Vice President of VAST said that plastic waste is a hot topic for both the community and the government. VAST has actively carried out research related to the assessment of biodegradability of plastic products and the building of measures to promote the plastic biodegradation process.

The forum aimed to introduce solutions to handle biodegradable plastics, contributing to building a solid scientific basis to create plastic waste treatment technology suitable for Vietnam towards the production and use environmentally friendly plastic products, he noted.

At the event, the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands introduced a national action plan on marine plastic waste management by 2030. Accordingly, by 2030, single-use plastic products will be completely banned at tourist sites and coastal areas. The plan is also expected to reduce 75% of ocean plastic waste and remove 100% of plastic waste at marine protected areas.

Many research results on the biodegradability of plastic were announced at the forum and are the scientific basis for creating technology to treat biodegradable polymers and plastics, contributing to reducing the negative impact of plastic waste.

The forum also introduced the technology on the production of household products made from biodegradable and safe plastics by An Phat Group which is considered as a pioneering technology in Vietnam.
