The information was announced by the Standing Committee of the VGCL Presidium during an online meeting on May 17 with the labour unions of provinces and cities where the epidemic is progressing.

Accordingly, the VGCL plans to spend more than VND1.5 billion on around 1,550 gifts for the workers to a value of VND1 million for each affected employee.

At the same time, around VND1 billion will be spent supporting officials and employees at 10 hospitals under medical isolation. Each unit will be granted VND100 million.

Reports at the meeting showed that the epidemic is developing with a high degree of complexity in industrial parks, with around 366 positive cases among workers at enterprises and industrial zones in the six provinces and cities of Hanoi, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Phu Tho and Da Nang.

The local labour confederations proposed the VGCL soon issue specific mechanisms and policies to support its members and workers in difficulty, while recommending businesses support those in isolation with money to cover their catering costs, as well as adjusting their production plans and working shifts to ensure all employees have jobs to maintain their lives, without terminating their contracts.

* This afternoon, Hanoi leaders made donations to the capital city’s fund against COVID-19. Each employee from the Hanoi Party Committee and its affiliated units donated at least one day's salary. At the event, the organisers collected an initial amount of nearly VND150 million for the Hanoi COVID-19 Prevention and Control Fund.

* Earlier the same morning, the Mobile Police Command (under the Ministry of Public Security) in Hanoi sent nearly 300 officers to Bac Giang to support the capital city’s neighbouring province in its prevention and control of COVID-19.

* In Ho Chi Minh City, the city’s Department of Transport on May 17 issued a notice requesting management units of bus stations and passenger transport businesses in the city strictly implement epidemic prevention and control regulations. Transport businesses must absolutely not stop picking up and dropping off passengers in provinces and cities with COVID-19 outbreaks, but must apply social distancing on the vehicle and are only allowed to transport passengers at up to 50% of capacity.

* On the morning of the same day, at the Tay Trang International Border Gate in Dien Bien province, representatives from the High Command of Military Zone 2 handed over medical equipment and supplies to provinces and units in Northern Laos to help in their fight against COVID-19. Also on the occasion, units from Military Zone 2 provided medical equipment and supplies worth a total of nearly VND2 billion to their twinned units in Laos to help prevent and control the epidemic.
