Strengthening friendship, trust and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and China

At the invitation of the Chinese Government, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led a Vietnamese delegation to attend the 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (CABIS) in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China, from September 16-17. This is an important foreign activity, demonstrating the importance of both countries for Vietnam-China relations and ASEAN-China cooperation.

The Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership has continued its development trend and has achieved many positive results in recent years. Leaders of the two Parties and two countries have maintained regular exchanges and contacts as well as consolidated and enhanced political trust. The official visit to China by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong (in October 2022) has provided a strong impetus to the relationship between the two countries. PM Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to China (in June 2023) on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 15th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership continued promoting practical cooperation in various specific fields.

In the first seven months of 2023, the total trade turnover between Vietnam and China reached 89.1 billion USD.

Vietnam's exports regained momentum and the trade deficit decreased. The cooperation between ministries, agencies and localities of the two countries has developed positively in many fields.

Mechanisms for exchanges and cooperation between border localities from the two countries have been carried out effectively. Trade at border gates between the two countries has increased. Guangxi is the leading Chinese locality in terms of economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam. The two countries have also strengthened cooperation in the fields of culture, education and training, people-to-people exchanges, and border management.

The CAEXPO and CABIS, which are organised annually by China and ASEAN in Nanning City, are the most important trade promotion events and among the top 10 expos in China. In previous fairs and summits, Vietnam assigned Government leaders and representatives to attend and was always the leading country in ASEAN in the number of booths and participants.

As part of activities commemorating the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership and marking 20 years ASEAN and China co-hosting, this year's CAEXPO and CABIS have the theme of “Building a harmonious homeland, a common destiny to the future – promoting high-quality development of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and building an economic growth centre”.

This year's expo and summit take place in the year when Vietnam and China celebrating the 15th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership (2008-2023). With about 250 booths, the delegation of Vietnamese businesses continues to be the largest in ASEAN.

This event will promote the economic and trade cooperation of China with ASEAN, as well as with Vietnam, thereby making an important contribution to the ASEAN-China strategic partnership and the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between Vietnam and China.

PM Chinh’s attendance at the CAEXPO and CABIS demonstrates the importance Vietnam and China place on the cooperation between ASEAN and China as well as the friendly neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, including the cooperation between Vietnamese localities and businesses and Guangxi Province, China.

The Prime Minister's business trip continues to affirm the 13th National Party Congress’s foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development; multilateralisation and diversification of foreign relations; and comprehensive and deep international integration in a proactive and active manner. Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community. The clear and consistent message conveyed through the business trip is that Vietnam values its relationship with China and wishes to strengthen political trust and comprehensive cooperation with China, including promoting economic and trade cooperation and exchange between people and localities of the two countries.
