The visit is expected to inject fresh momentum into the good neighbourly relationship, traditional friendship, and comprehensive and long-term sustainable cooperation between Viet Nam and Cambodia, making bilateral ties more substantive and effective while elevating them to new heights.
Viet Nam and Cambodia officially established diplomatic relations in 1967, marking an important milestone in the development of ties between the two close neighbours.
Nearly six decades later, the Viet Nam-Cambodia friendship has demonstrated its enduring vitality. It was forged and strengthened through years of hardship, when the two countries stood shoulder to shoulder in their fierce struggles for national liberation.
The sacrifices made by Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts, who made great sacrifices in helping Cambodia overthrow the genocidal Pol Pot regime, have become a glorious chapter in the history of both nations, standing as a powerful testament to their solidarity, sincerity, and willingness to share hardships.
This long-standing friendship, a source of pride and a precious shared asset, has been carefully preserved, cherished, and nurtured by successive generations of leaders and people of both countries, with a commitment to passing it on intact to future generations.
In recent years, cooperation between Viet Nam and Cambodia has become increasingly substantive, practical, and effective, underpinned by their traditional friendship and a high level of political trust. The two sides have maintained regular high-level and all-level exchanges through bilateral mechanisms as well as multilateral forums.
The Party, State, and people of Viet Nam consistently attach great importance and give high priority to consolidating and developing the good neighbourly relationship, traditional friendship, and comprehensive and long-term sustainable cooperation with Cambodia, based on mutual respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate interests.
Cooperation through party channels continues to play a guiding role in bilateral relations. Key bilateral cooperation mechanisms are held regularly and have proved effective. Close inter-parliamentary cooperation has also made a significant contribution to strengthening the long-term strategic solidarity between the two parties, two states, and two national assemblies.
Defence and security cooperation remains a key pillar of bilateral ties and continues to grow closer and more substantive. Both sides reaffirm the principle of not allowing any hostile force to use the territory of one country to undermine the security of the other.
Based on treaties, agreements and high-level commitments, the two countries are actively coordinating efforts to complete land border demarcation and marker planting.
In 2019, the two countries signed two legal documents recognising the completion of demarcation and marker planting along approximately 84% of the Viet Nam-Cambodia land border, while negotiations continue to resolve the remaining 16%.
Trade, investment, and tourism cooperation has emerged as a highlight of the bilateral relationship. Two-way trade has maintained steady growth, reaching 11.33 billion USD in 2025, up more than 11.7% from 2024. In the first six months of 2026, bilateral trade totalled 6.86 billion USD, an increase of 10.3% compared with the same period in 2025. Viet Nam is currently Cambodia’s third-largest trading partner and its largest trading partner within ASEAN.
To date, Viet Nam has 229 valid investment projects in Cambodia with total registered capital of approximately 2.94 billion USD, making Cambodia the second-largest destination among 85 countries and territories receiving Vietnamese outbound investment, while placing Viet Nam among Cambodia’s five largest foreign investors. The two countries are working closely to soon raise bilateral trade to 20 billion USD.
In 2025, 1.22 million Vietnamese visitors travelled to Cambodia, the highest number from any source country, while Viet Nam welcomed nearly 700,000 Cambodian visitors. Bilateral cooperation in education and training, transport, culture, healthcare, and telecommunications has also been strengthened, delivering many positive outcomes.
Viet Nam and Cambodia are coordinating closely at international, regional, and subregional forums, particularly the United Nations, ASEAN, and ASEAN-led mechanisms, as well as Mekong subregional cooperation frameworks. Their close coordination and mutual support have helped enhance the standing and prestige of both countries in the region and in the world.
Viet Nam-Cambodia relations are entering a promising new chapter, with the two countries set to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their partnership in 2027, at a time when both are moving confidently into new stages of development with renewed aspirations, determination, and momentum.
Against this backdrop, the official visit to Viet Nam by President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Khuon Sudary not only provides an opportunity for leaders of the two countries to reflect on their close ties and fruitful cooperation but also to discuss strategic orientations and measures to elevate bilateral relations to a new level in the years ahead.
