This is the second consecutive time a Vietnamese cybersecurity company has ranked first at one of the world's largest cyber-attack competitions.
The reward for each vulnerability found is 20,000 to 50,000 USD, with the total prize at Pwn2Own being about 1 million USD, of which Viettel's cybersecurity team received more than 200,000 USD. The vulnerabilities discovered by Viettel's cybersecurity team also help manufacturers improve the security of their devices, avoiding the disclosure of images and data of individuals and businesses using them.
Pwn2Own 2024 has eight categories, focusing on devices that integrate artificial intelligence (AI), requiring security experts to understand source code while also knowing how AI systems store, process data and operate in devices.
The challenge is that most AI devices can automatically detect and authenticate users based on machine learning automatically update and adjust to detect abnormal behaviours, also known as dynamic protection. Therefore, finding vulnerabilities and taking control of devices has become more difficult.
These devices are also developed by large technology companies, undergoing rigorous testing and continuous security updates. Therefore, Pwn2Own is not only a competition between security research teams but also a competition with large technology companies.
