The conference, co-organised by the General Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Viettel group, focused on providing tsunami warnings to the public in Vietnam’s most at-risk areas, including the central provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai, and the southern provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria – Vung Tau.

Located on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and boasting a 3,200 kilometre coastline, Vietnam is one of the most vulnerable countries at risk from the impacts of climate change, earthquakes and tsunamis. The Prime Minister ratified the tsunami warning system project in April to help deal with these risks.

The project will support the Institute of Geophysics in supervising and analysing tsunami threats in order to provide timely warnings to the people.

Da Nang is the first city in the country to install a management centre and ten tsunami warning stations. Based on the results of the initial project, the Viettel group hopes to build more warning stations in the central and southern provinces in the future.
