Efforts made to promote power of great national unity in the digital age

Great national unity is a core element that determines the success of the cause of national construction and defence. Today’s digital social environment offers numerous opportunities, but also presents considerable challenges, requiring changes in both thinking and methods of construction to further strengthen the unity of the entire nation.

The power of unity is rooted in patriotism and national pride.

Power to develop the country

Great national unity has consistently been a guiding ideology of the Party and the State throughout the process of leading the people in the struggle for national development and progress. Thanks to the strength of national unity, Viet Nam has achieved remarkable successes during the renewal period, becoming a symbol of peace and stability. From a once underdeveloped economy, Viet Nam has risen to rank among the world’s top 40 economies. The country has also established diplomatic relations with 194 nations and maintains strategic partnerships with 13 of them.

Viet Nam has emerged as a bright spot in poverty reduction, with a markedly improved quality of life for its people. Speaking at the 10th National Congress of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front for the 2024–2029 term, General Secretary To Lam stressed the critical role of the great national unity bloc, especially in the new era of science and technology.

In the current context of digital transformation, to create the strength of national unity, the role of technology cannot be ignored.

The 2025 Global Digital Overview Report by We Are Social reveals that Viet Nam now has 79.8 million internet users, with an online access rate of 78.8%. There are 76.2 million social media users, accounting for 75.2% of the population. Platforms such as Instagram have 10.6 million users, while TikTok has 40.9 million users aged 18 and above. These figures demonstrate that the majority of Vietnamese people rely on the internet and social media platforms as an essential part of their daily lives.

Most information about social life is now received through digital platforms. These same platforms also allow every citizen the freedom to express their personal views and opinions within the bounds of the law. This convenience has created - and continues to create - many opportunities to strengthen the great national unity bloc. In the digital society, solidarity can no longer remain solely a matter of shared will; it must also be actively present on technological platforms -where knowledge is shared, traditional values are preserved, and new values are created.

Technology as a tool for connection

One of the key goals of the National Digital Transformation Programme is to build a digital social platform, aiming to ensure that every citizen has the ability to access, use, and create digital content, while simultaneously enhancing digital literacy and ensuring information security. This objective is vital in bridging the country’s existing "digital divide," as more than 20 million people have yet to fully integrate into the digital space.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, nearly 240 villages and hamlets still remain outside mobile signal coverage. The Ministry has pledged to rapidly complete the necessary infrastructure to bring mobile broadband coverage to these areas, enabling local residents to enter the digital social environment and contribute their voices equally and positively to the strengthening of the great national unity bloc.

Launched nationwide in March 2025, the “digital mass education” campaign offers a wide range of programmes, once again affirming that technology is a powerful tool in the new context, helping the people to fully embrace their central and essential role in harnessing the strength of great national unity.

In today’s online environment, the risk of fragmentation within the national unity bloc is becoming increasingly prevalent and complex. Hostile and reactionary elements, both domestic and foreign, continuously fabricate false and toxic information, distorting the Party’s guidelines and the State’s policies and laws with the aim of sowing division and public confusion. Therefore, making technology more accessible and promoting the widespread adoption of digital applications is an essential and inevitable path. It enables all segments of society to better recognise harmful misinformation and assert the correct viewpoints needed to resist the subversive plots of hostile forces.

Moreover, the digital environment provides citizens with opportunities to express solidarity with international friends and to spread the image of Viet Nam and its people to the world. This is a profound manifestation of combining national strength with the strength of the times, defending and reinforcing the great national unity bloc.

The unity of the Vietnamese people on social media is a strength and a responsibility that must be carried out by citizens, online communities, and government leaders at all levels. Social networks may include users of different religions, ethnicities, and nationalities; they may live in different countries and hold different passports. But if we are Vietnamese, then we all share one homeland—our S-shaped country.

Major General, PhD and Writer Nguyen Hong Thai from the Central Council for Theory and Criticism of Literature and the Arts stated that unity of Vietnamese people on social media is an advantage and a necessary task that must be undertaken by citizens, online communities, and government leaders at all levels. The online community may consist of individuals of different religions, ethnic groups, and nationalities, living in various countries with different passports. But if we are Vietnamese, we all share one homeland -our S-shaped land.

Fostering solidarity among Vietnamese people in the online community must begin with patriotism and love for the homeland. Vietnamese people uniting with international friends on social media also stems from a sense of pride and dignity in their country and nation. Social media must become a forum for patriotism, for the spirit of solidarity in today’s era of globalisation.

To promote the spirit of great national unity in the digital age, it is essential to strengthen the leadership role of the Party, the State, the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, and other socio-political organisations. This can be achieved by developing robust digital infrastructure and leveraging technological tools to connect people across regions, ethnic groups, and generations.

It is necessary to create favourable conditions for all citizens to access knowledge, engage in social activities, and foster innovation with the support of technology, while strictly handling violations of the law in cyberspace. In addition, continuous innovation in education and awareness-raising is vital, helping citizens remain vigilant against false and toxic information aimed at undermining the great national unity bloc on social media.
