This is the sixth Vietnamese company and first member of the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) in Vietnam to be certified to FSC standards.
GFTN Vietnam Co-ordinator Le Cong Uan said that the certification benefits both environmental protection and Forexco’s business.
As an internationally recognised certification, the FSC will help the timber company conquer demanding international markets, said Uan.
Forexco began to seek FSC certification for its 4,000 hectares of forest in 2006. However, land use issues delayed the project until July last year. Two assessments have been carried out since then.
According to Forexco director Pham Phu Thong, in addition to CoC certificates, the FSC management certification provides proof that the company’s wood supply chain is sustainable and controlled at every stage from raw material to final products.
Thong added that the company will continue to expand its FSC-certified forests, focusing on those owned by loan borrowers and households with forests that border the company’s land in order to improve their value and productivity.
