The figure was announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment at a conference to review the programme held in Da Nang on December 5.

Specifically, 573.9 million trees were planted in scattered areas, while 865.2 million trees were planted in concentrated forests, equivalent to 429,125 hectares of forest.

A number of localities with the highest number of planted trees are Phu Tho, Lao Cai, An Giang, Lang Son, Lam Dong, Tay Ninh, Quang Ngai, and Gia Lai.

Total funding for the tree planting over the past five years was nearly 15.3 trillion VND (580.3 million USD), of which nearly half came from private capital, reflecting society’s broad support for the programme.

Trieu Van Luc, Deputy Director of the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection, said that tree planting has become a fine tradition, helping maintain the forest coverage rate at 42%.

He called on localities and agencies to continue implementing the tree planting programme effectively to further promote the protection and development of forests as a means of protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
