This initiative is part of the city’s efforts to achieve an 8% economic growth target for 2025.

On March 17, the Party Committee of the Hanoi People’s Committee issued a report to the City Party Committee directing the planning and renovation of several public squares and spaces in Hoan Kiem District.

Earlier, on March 3, the committee released Notice No. 25-TB/ĐU, instructing relevant departments to assess land use and identify suitable areas for public space enhancement. Three key areas were identified for research: Dong Kinh-Nghia Thuc Square and the eastern space of Hoan Kiem Lake, King Le Temple, and Nam Huong Communal House.

The proposed project covers approximately 2.14 hectares, bordered by Hoan Kiem Lake to the west, residential areas to the north, Ly Thai To Street to the east, and Tran Nguyen Han Street to the south.

Within this area, there are 47 current land users, including 12 organisations and 35 households. Notably, the Ham Ca Map (Shark Jaw) building at No.7 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, constructed between 1991 and 1993, is slated for demolition to expand public space in Dong Kinh-Nghia Thuc Square.

The city has also set a deadline to complete the demolition of the building and clear the site by April 30, 2025.

The Hanoi People’s Committee has directed the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee to develop a comprehensive master plan alongside a specific urban design. This plan will serve as the foundation for the renovation and redevelopment of Dong Kinh-Nghia Thuc Square, ensuring alignment with city regulations. The planning process will involve consultations with the city’s Architecture Council and input from relevant organisations, individuals, and local communities.

By implementing these measures, Hanoi aims to create a favourable mechanism for the project, thus enhancing the urban landscape and contributing to the city’s sustainable development goals.
