The announcement was made on June 27 at the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, France.

The Citadel was built in 1397 and served as the country’s capital in the final years of the Tran dynasty and during the subsequent the Ho dynasty (1400 – 1407), when its official name was ‘Tay Do’ (Western Capital).

The Citadel was where many cultural exchanges between Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations took place. It is associated with the renovations and new ideologies that flourished under the Ho dynasty, which contributed to the progress of Vietnam and the region.

The citadel also symbolises the breakthroughs in stone construction techniques, and it is the only stone citadel in Vietnam and the Southeast Asian region that which was built within only three months.

It was one of 35 sites that were being considered for recognition by the Committee in its 35th session from June 19-29.

The Ho Dynasty Citadel is Vietnam’s seventh UNESCO cultural heritage site after Ha Long Bay, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Hoi An ancient town, the Hue Monuments complex, My Son Sanctuary and the Thang Long Royal Citadel in Hanoi.
