In Pictures: “Leaving youth behind” to set out with faith in National Reunification

More than half a century has passed, yet 72,000 files and personal keepsakes of officials assigned to the B Front have been preserved intact as an inseparable part of the nation's history. The exhibition “Leaving youth behind” brings together both witnesses and historical artefacts, while serving as a bridge between generations and spreading the noble ideal of dedicating one's life to the homeland.

During the years of the resistance war against the US, in response to the sacred call of the nation, tens of thousands of officials, intellectuals and artists from northern Viet Nam, as well as southern officials who had regrouped in the North earlier, set aside their family responsibilities and personal lives, leaving behind what they cherished most in order to head south and join the struggle.

They departed while still very young, carrying with them profound patriotism and an unwavering belief in the day when the country would be reunified. Diaries, love letters and Party membership cards, now stained by the passage of time, were entrusted to the Government Committee for National Reunification before they departed. Today, these have become invaluable historical artefacts preserved at the National Archives Centre No. III under the State Records and Archives Department, Ministry of Home Affairs.
Standing before these files, people across the country are reminded of a "golden generation" filled with lofty ideals-men and women who devoted their entire youth to securing peace for the nation.
