The three-day event is being held jointly by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and the Japan National Institute for Materials Science.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, MoST Deputy Minister Tran Viet Thanh said that the workshop provides a good chance for local scientists and international colleagues to share their experiences in advanced materials science and nanotechnology, and assess the actual situation and necessary requirements for developing these technologies in Vietnam.

Thanh also stated that Vietnam has made significant scientific and technological achievements in recent times, especially in its strong areas such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, and mechanics.

Vietnam ranks 19th in the world and leads the ASEAN bloc nations in applied mathematics, he said. It also currently ranks 64th in the world and third in the region in the field of physics, thanks to encouraging studies in quantum information, quantum optics, and nanotechnology.

Delegates at the event will present 424 reports covering important issues in advanced materials science and nanotechnology, including materials for electronics and photonics, nanostructured materials and devices, materials and technologies for environmental protection, clean energy devices, and nanotechnology for life sciences and agriculture.

During the workshop, Vietnam also expects to sign a number of collaborative research agreements in the field with partner countries.
