IPv6-Only to be deployed to drive national digital infrastructure development

The VNNIC Internet Conference 2026, organised by the Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology in Ho Chi Minh City on June 19, focused on the theme “IPv6-Only – A Driver for National Digital Infrastructure Development”.

The event brought together more than 400 experts, business leaders and representatives of domestic and international Internet organisations to discuss the next stage in the development of the Internet in Viet Nam: the deployment of IPv6-Only.

According to VNNIC, digital infrastructure is becoming an essential foundation for the development of the digital economy, digital society and digital government.

As artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and digital services continue to expand rapidly, Internet infrastructure is required not only to provide connectivity but also to ensure scalability, sustainability, security and future readiness.

In this journey, IPv6 has established itself as the core foundation of the next-generation Internet. After more than a decade of promoting IPv6 deployment, Viet Nam has achieved a number of significant milestones.

Currently, more than 67% of Internet users in Viet Nam access the Internet via IPv6, with tens of millions of people using IPv6 on a daily basis.

Internet infrastructure, telecommunications networks, digital services and major online platforms in Viet Nam are now ready for IPv6 and continue to expand its deployment in practice.

However, Internet development does not stop with IPv6 adoption. Globally, the shift towards IPv6-Only environments is becoming increasingly evident.

Telecommunications operators, service providers, technology companies and international Internet organisations are gradually eliminating their reliance on IPv4, moving towards a simpler, more efficient infrastructure model capable of meeting the future demands of Internet growth.

Recognising this trend, Viet Nam has launched the Programme for Promoting, Deploying and Transitioning to IPv6-Only for the 2026–2030 period, aiming to synchronise the transformation of the national Internet infrastructure, foster innovation and strengthen integration with the global Internet ecosystem.

At the conference, participants noted that IPv6-Only represents an inevitable step in the evolution of the next-generation Internet. IPv6 not only addresses the challenge of Internet address exhaustion but also opens up new opportunities for the digital economy.

With its capacity for large-scale direct connectivity, simplified network architecture, improved operational efficiency and enhanced security, IPv6-Only is becoming the Internet infrastructure foundation of the AI, cloud computing, IoT, 5G/6G and industrial Internet era.

The transition to IPv6-Only is therefore not merely a technological shift. It is a process of modernising the national Internet infrastructure and laying the groundwork for the development of data centres, cloud computing, next-generation telecommunications networks, digital platforms, digital services and innovation ecosystems.

IPv6-Only is a key driver of national digital infrastructure development—one of the strategic infrastructure pillars that will strengthen the country's competitiveness and growth potential for decades to come.
