From October 26 to 30, a delegation from the Viet Nam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety, led by its Director General Nguyen Hoang Linh, attended the 2026 International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in Incheon, the Republic of Korea.
At the conference, Director General Nguyen Hoang Linh took part in a high-level discussion on nuclear regulation, sharing Viet Nam’s priorities in developing an effective and efficient regulatory framework, strengthening the capacity of the regulatory authority, and enhancing coordination in nuclear safety, security, and safeguards.
Notably, during the visit, the delegation promoted technical cooperation with the Republic of Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), with a view to strengthening safety assessment capabilities in support of Viet Nam’s nuclear power programme.
The 2026 International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power was organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in coordination with the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD/NEA), and hosted by the Government of the Republic of Korea.
The conference brought together government representatives, leaders of regulatory and supervisory authorities, international organisations, and experts in the nuclear energy sector. Discussions focused on the role of nuclear power in ensuring energy security, meeting growing electricity demand, and achieving sustainable development goals.
At the opening session, Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea, together with senior representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency and other international organisations, highlighted the role of nuclear power in the future energy mix. They also stressed that nuclear power development must go hand in hand with ensuring safety and security, strengthening national capabilities, and building public confidence.
The discussions focused on key issues, including the development of national nuclear infrastructure, improving the effectiveness of nuclear regulation, advancing technologies for advanced reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs), mobilising financial resources, developing human resources, and strengthening international cooperation.
Participation in the conference provided the Viet Nam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety with an opportunity to share and update its knowledge of international experience, expand professional cooperation, and contribute to strengthening state management capacity in nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, thereby meeting the requirements for preparations to implement Viet Nam’s nuclear power programme.
