This year’s tournament attracted approximately 380 participants, including 317 athletes from 15 provinces and cities: Can Tho, Da Nang, Dong Nai, Dong Thap, Gia Lai, Ha Noi, Ha Tinh, Lam Dong, Phu Tho, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Tuyen Quang, and host province Thai Nguyen.

This was an important tournament in the national disabled sports competition system, aiming to assess the quality of training and coaching in localities, while also providing opportunities for athletes to interact, compete, improve their professional skills, and gain competitive experience.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Doan Van Cong, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thai Nguyen province, emphasised that the tournament not only contributes to promoting the sports movement for people with disabilities but also carries profound humanitarian significance in motivating and encouraging people with disabilities to improve their health, enhance their self-confidence, and integrate into the community.

According to Cong, this year’s tournament took place in the atmosphere of the whole country commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954 - 2026) and the 136th anniversary of the birth of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - 2026). This was also a practical activity in response to the “National Movement for Physical Training Following the Example of the Great President Ho Chi Minh,” contributing to building a professional, sustainable, and humane sports movement for people with disabilities.

According to the organisers, this year’s athletics competition featured a total of 188 events, including 76 running events, 26 jumping events, and 86 throwing and pushing events across various disability categories. Meanwhile, weightlifting included 15 individual men's and women’s events, comprising 8 men’s weight classes and 7 women’s weight classes.

Besides its professional significance, this was also an opportunity to select outstanding athletes to prepare for important upcoming international competitions such as the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan and the 2027 Southeast Asian Para Games.

The event is scheduled to run until May 10.
