This is an event following the success of a campaign calling for donation of tissues and organs launched by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 19, 2024.
According to Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan, it has been 32 years since the first kidney transplant. Up to now, the Vietnamese health sector has mastered organ transplant techniques, approaching the world with a high survival rate and reasonable costs. On average, the sector performs more than 1,000 organ transplants each year.
In 2024, the number of cases diagnosed with brain death (as of December 13) is 189, nearly 6 times higher than the 34 cases diagnosed with brain death in 2023; the number of patients donating organs after death in 2024 is 38 - this is considered the highest number of organ donations in Vietnam to date. However, the rate of organ donation from brain-dead donors is still modest compared to the demand for organ recipients.
The Ministry of Health has continued to research and propose amendments to the Law on Donation, Collection and Transplantation of Human Tissues and Organs, and Collection and Donation of Corpses in accordance with the actual situation. At the same time, the National Organ Transplant Coordination Centre has been required to implement organ coordination activities, ensuring publicity, transparency and fairness.
