On November 27, the Internet Day 2024 conference and exhibition in Hanoi, themed “A New Leap for Vietnam’s Internet (Breakthrough with DC, Cloud, 5G, and AI),” highlighted key opportunities for Vietnam’s digital economy.

According to Statista, internet users in Vietnam will steadily increase through 2029, with Google and Temasek estimating Vietnam’s internet economy will reach 36 billion USD in 2024, led by e-commerce contributing 22 billion USD.

Digital infrastructure is now considered a strategic asset akin to transportation and electricity. Investments in advanced technologies like data centres, cloud computing, 5G, and AI are essential for fostering innovation and addressing national challenges. By 2025, Vietnam plans to operate two new undersea cable routes and add eight more by 2030, ensuring robust international bandwidth.

The rollout of 5G technology marks a major milestone for 2024, with major providers like Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone rapidly expanding their networks. By 2025, some providers aim to have 5G coverage, reaching 50% of their 4G infrastructure.

Additionally, Vietnam encourages the development of AI data centres, IoT, and blockchain platforms, laying the groundwork for cost-effective technology adoption. By 2030, the goal is for every Vietnamese citizen to own an average of four IoT connections, driving automation and smart connectivity across various sectors.
