The 15,800 ha conservation area is located in Bhalee and A Vuong communes in Tay Giang district and Song Kon and Talu communes in Dong Giang district. It will include 22 sub-zones and a 35,000 ha buffer zone.
The project’s objective is to increase the numbers of the endangered species and protect their habitat, in addition to preserving biodiversity in one of the top priority saola conservation areas in Vietnam.
It also aims to maintain drainage basin watersheds, protect agricultural production and hydropower projects in the region, and raise people’s awareness of preserving the saola and nature conservation in general.
Saolas were first discovered in the central province of Ha Tinh in 1992. However, their population has decreased drastically and the species is facing extinction due to indescriminate hunting and loss of habitat.
