To meet the people’s demand for clean water and serve the province’s socio-economic development, Quang Ninh Clean Water Company (Quawaco) has continually invested in infrastructure while promoting the use of new technology to increase the quality of water supply.
Quawaco is managing 25 surface water treatment plants and 20 groundwater wells, with a total capacity of 248,000 cubic metres per day. Its water supply network also covers 11/13 district-level localities in Quang Ninh with 3.3 million kilometres of pipelines.
At the end of 2022, 73.85% of urban households in Quang Ninh had access to clean water, while the rate was 50% for rural areas.
Determining that expanding the water supply network beyond the province’s urban areas, especially in remote, border and island areas, is an important political task, Quawaco has made a thorough review of its water supply network, with a focus on laying out expansion plans for underserved areas.
The company has worked with local authorities to enhance collaboration in expanding the water supply network. To date, Quawaco’s water supply network has been expanded to Quang Yen, Dong Trieu, Uong Bi, and Mong Cai with more than 20 projects in total.
According Do Thanh Lam, the Deputy Director of the Uong Bi Water Company,
a member of Quawaco, since early 2023, the company has encouraged people in areas with available pipelines to install equipment to access clean water. It also proposed installing four more pipelines, test the quality of natural water and publicly announce the results, and make plans to raise public awareness on the importance of clean water. Currently all households in the areas where the company’s pipelines are installed are now using clean water. In the first ten months of 2023, the company gained 738 new household users, raising the rate of households with access to clean water to 96.02%, up 2 percentage points from last year.
The Quang Yen Water Company – another member of Quawaco – also had a further 40 kilometres of pipelines installed, meeting the demand of nearly 1,400 new customers. According to Deputy Director of the Quang Yen Water Company, the expansion of the clean water supply network has made it easier for many households to access clean water.
Statistics by Quawaco showed that the company witnessed 7,528 more households applying for clean water services in the first ten months of 2023, raising the total number of the company’s customers to 300,000 households.
Company Deputy Director Tran Manh said the company is striving to raise the proportion of people with access to clean water supplied by the company to 98% in urban areas and 80% in rural areas, contributing to the enhancement of local residents’ living standards.
