Six more gold medals lift Vietnam to second in SEA Games tally

Nhan Dan Online - Vietnam has climbed its way to second position on the SEA Games medal count as its tally increased with an additional six gold medals on December 16 from track and field (1), archery (1), rowing (1), cycling (1) and swimming (2).

Top Vietnam female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien satisfied home fans with the 400m medley gold medal - her third title at this year's tournament. She also broke the SEA Games record in this discipline with a time of 4:46.16, 4.72 seconds faster than the previous record.

Hoang Quy Phuoc also lived up to expectations as he took another gold medal for Vietnam in the men's 200m freestyle event, timing 1:50.64.

Pham Thi Binh clinched the women's marathon crown after finishing the race in two hours, 45 minutes and 34 seconds, while archer Nguyen Tien Cuong overpowered his Thai rival with a finals score of 138 - 136 to take top honours of the men's three-string 50m discipline.

The remaining two gold medals were captured by rowers Le Thi An and Tran Thi Sam in the women's LW2X event, and by cyclists Mai Nguyen Hung, Le Van Duan, Trinh Duc Tam and Nguyen Thanh Tam in the men's team 100km time trial.

Four silver medals were added to Vietnam's tally thanks to Pham Thi Thao and Pham Thi Hai (women's LW2X, rowing); Nguyen Dinh Huy, Duong Thanh Binh, Pham Minh Chinh and Nguyen Van Linh (men's LM4-, rowing); Vu Thi Huong, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tham, Mai Thi Phuong and Do Thi Quyen (women's 4x100m relay, track and field); and Tran Van Hoa (men's 94kg, weightlifting).

The only bronze medal Vietnam won today went to the women's sepak takraw team who lost to Myanmar in the regu semifinal match.
