Vietnam’s second spot strengthened with 10 more gold medals

Nhan Dan Online - Vietnam continued to solidify their second-place position in the provisional SEA Games standings, winning ten more gold medals today in track and field (5), Vovinam (3) and Judo (2).

Nguyen Van Lai exceeded expectations, finishing first in the men’s 10,000m with a time of 29:44.82, 1.79 seconds faster than the Thai runner-up Srisung. This is Lai’s second title in the long-distance races, after the men’s 5,000m crown he won two days ago.

Duong Thi Viet Anh succeeded in defending her high jump crown, clearing 1.84m.

Nguyen Van Hung brought home the day’s third gold medal in track and field in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 16.67m

The 1,500m race was dominated by Vietnam, with two gold-medal performances turned in by Duong Van Thai (men, 3:58.02) and Do Thi Thao (women, 4:22.64).

Martial artists Nguyen Van Cuong, Nguyen Binh Dinh, Huynh Khac Nguyen and Tran Cong Tao won Vietnam’s first Vovinam gold medal. They took top honours in the men’s team demonstration event with 280 points.

Tran Khanh Trang beat Ju Lep Kyaw of Myanmar 2-0 in the women’s 50kg combat finals to claim the second gold for the Vovinam team, and Nguyen Duy Khanh brought home another in the men’s 65kg combat category.

Judo artist Van Ngoc Tu knocked out her Filipino opponent Helen Dawa in less than 30 seconds to claim the women's 48kg combat title, while teammate Ho Ngan Giang pocketed one more gold in the men's 60kg combat discipline.

Vietnam's medal tally also increased with six additional silver from Hua Le Cam Xuan and Pham Thi Bich Phuong (women’s doubles, Vovinam); Mai Thi Kim Thuy (women’s individual demonstration, Vovinam); Nguyen Thanh Hien (women’s 67kg combat, taekwondo); Quach Thi Lan, Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy and Nguyen Thi Thuy (women’s 4x100m relay, track and field); Nguyen Thi Quynh (women’s 52kg, Judo); and Nguyen Dinh Loc (men’s 66kg, Judo).

Six bronze medals were also added to Vietnam's collection, with two in petanque, two in table tennis, one in taekwondo and one in track and field.
