Pham Binh Dam, Charge d’Affaires of Viet Nam in Timor Leste, along with embassy staff, arrived in the capital Dili, formally bringing the Embassy of Viet Nam in Timor Leste into operation on April 12.
Welcoming the delegation at Dili International Airport were representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor Leste, together with Ambassadors and Charge d’Affaires from seven ASEAN countries that have established embassies in Timor Leste.
At the meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor Leste Bendito dos Santos Freitas and Charge d’Affaires Pham Binh Dam, both sides expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral relations in recent times.
The official opening of Viet Nam’s Embassy in Dili was described as an important milestone, helping to advance bilateral ties in a deeper, more substantive and effective direction, for the benefit of both nations’ peoples and for ASEAN unity and development.
Previously, the Embassy of Viet Nam in Indonesia concurrently covered Timor Leste. Timor Leste established its embassy in Ha Noi in April 2012.
Relations between Viet Nam and Timor Leste have been built on a strong foundation of friendship. Viet Nam was among the first countries to recognise the Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor Leste (FRETILIN) in 1975. The two countries officially established diplomatic relations on July 28, 2002. Over more than two decades, bilateral ties have been steadily strengthened through high-level visits and exchanges, alongside expanding cooperation across various fields.
