Pham Van Quan is a scientist with a PhD from Hanoi University of Architecture researching energy saving techniques to mitigate climate change.
Urgent social challenges such as climate change, water shortages, loss of biodiversity and the lack of raw materials were addressed at the annual competition organised by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
“Green Talents aims to encourage young sustainability experts around the world to search for global development solutions in the fight against worldwide climate change”, said BMBF Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Rachel, at the awards ceremony in Berlin. “We intend to intensify global exchanges between young researchers in the fields of environmental and sustainability research - the world needs the creative ideas of young people today more than ever,” he added.
The third ‘Green Talents’ this year attracted 331 young researchers from 58 different countries. The jury of German experts selected outstanding projects by 20 young scientists from Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Colombia, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Vietnam and the US.
The prize-winners had the chance to visit important research facilities, universities and companies prior to the awards ceremony to learn about pioneering German projects in various technological fields and network with renowned German experts and other young scientists.
