Attending the ceremony were General Le Hong Anh, former Politburo member and former Standing Member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat; leaders and former leaders of An Giang province; representatives from provinces and cities; and relatives and descendants of national hero Nguyen Trung Truc.
In a solemn atmosphere, delegates and local residents performed the incense-offering ceremony and recalled the life and resounding victories of the cloth-clad hero who devoted his entire life to the country and its people.
National hero Nguyen Trung Truc (real name Nguyen Van Lich, born in 1838) is a shining symbol of the indomitable spirit of the people of southern Viet Nam. His name is associated with two celebrated victories: burning the French warship Espérance on the Nhat Tao River in 1861 and the attack on the Kien Giang outpost in 1868.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the An Giang provincial People’s Committee Le Van Phuoc affirmed that the commemoration was a profound occasion to pay tribute to predecessors, arouse national pride and educate the younger generation about revolutionary traditions.
Referring to the event in which the Nguyen Trung Truc Communal House Festival was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2023, the provincial leader stressed the responsibility to preserve and promote historical values in association with the development of cultural and spiritual tourism in the locality.
Before the spirit of National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc, the Party Committee, authorities and people of An Giang vowed to continue to unite, promote the spirit of self-reliance and self-strengthening, and remain determined to successfully achieve socio-economic development targets, maintain national security and defence, and build their homeland into an increasingly prosperous, beautiful and civilised place.
