Accordingly, the decision allows the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board to collaborate with the Institute for Conservation of Monuments, the Viet Nam Institute of Archaeology, and the C.M. Lerici Foundation (Italy) to conduct an archaeological excavation at Tower Group L, located in Duy Phu Commune, Duy Xuyen District, Quang Nam Province. The excavation will take place from May 9 to July 30, 2025.
The permitted excavation area covers 150 square metres (10m x 15m per trench), under the direction of Mr Nguyen Ngoc Quy from the Viet Nam Institute of Archaeology.
The decision requires that, prior to the excavation, relevant agencies must implement appropriate reinforcement and structural support measures to preserve the integrity of the foundations and architectural elements expected to be uncovered, as well as the existing structural components of the towers.
During the excavation period, the authorised organisations must pay close attention to protecting the stratigraphy of the site. They are also responsible for raising public awareness regarding local cultural heritage preservation and must refrain from publishing any official conclusions without agreement from the governing body and the Department of Cultural Heritage.
All artefacts recovered during the excavation must be preserved and safeguarded by the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Nam Province. These entities are tasked with preventing damage or loss of artefacts and reporting to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on plans for their protection and promotion.
Within one month after the excavation campaign concludes, the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board, the Institute for Conservation of Monuments, and the Viet Nam Institute of Archaeology must submit a preliminary report and propose a management and protection plan for the excavated area. A full scientific report must be submitted to the ministry within one year.
Before publishing the excavation results in Viet Nam, Italy or internationally, the licensed institutions must coordinate and agree with the Department of Cultural Heritage.
