Vietnamese films win prizes at HAIFF

Nhan Dan - ‘Thien Menh Anh Hung’ (Blood Letter), a Vietnamese film by director Victor Vu, was presented with the Jury’s prize for Best Feature Film at the awards ceremony of the second Hanoi International Film Festival (HAIFF), hosted by the Hanoi Friendship Cultural Palace yesterday.

‘Bo Vang’ (Ox), another Vietnamese cinematic work by director Tran Khanh Duyen, won the Jury’s prize for Best Animated Film at the ceremony.

‘Bermula Dari A’ (Staring from Letter ‘A’) (Indonesia) and ‘Shackled’ (the Philippines) were named ‘Best Short Film’ and ‘Best Feature Film’, respectively.

The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) awards went to the Turkish film entitled ‘Night of Silence’. The film also helped Reis Celik and Ilyas Salman bring home the Best Director and Best Leading Actor prizes, respectively.

Ying Yaning from China won Best Leading Actress for her role in the film ‘Song of Silence’, while Mina Yonezawa from Japan earned the Best Young Director for her film ‘Solo’.

Under the theme ‘The Unification and Development of the Asian-Pacific Film Industry’, the HAIFF aims to promote the integration of Vietnamese cinema and boost exchange amongst film industries in the region and the world. The five-day event saw competition between 37 cinematic works in categories of feature-films, short- films, documentary and animated films.

An exhibition, a campus of making short films, and two workshops on ‘Vietnamese cinema during the renewal period’ and ‘The development trend of cinema in the digital era’ also took place under the framework of the event. Prize winning films from around the world, 12 outstanding films from the Republic of Korea (RoK) as well as 30 Vietnamese films focusing on national renewal, Hanoi the capital city and contemporary movies made during the 2010 – 2012 period were also introduced to the ‘seventh art’s’ lovers at the festival.
