Two history titles win top prizes at National Book Awards

Two history-themed books — “Illustrated History of Vietnam” by Dong A Books in collaboration with the University of Education Publishers, and “The Story of Civilisation” by authors Will and Ariel Durant, published by the Social Sciences Publishing House and the IRED Institute of Education — won the top A Prize at the National Book Awards ceremony on the evening of March 8.

The 8th National Book Awards ceremony took place at Viet Nam Television’s Studio 1, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, the Viet Nam Publishing Association, and Viet Nam Television.

The event was attended by Trinh Van Quyet, Politburo Member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, and head of the committee's Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation.

The ceremony featured the participation of Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung along with Party Central Committee Members: Le Quoc Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation and President of the Viet Nam Journalists’ Association; Nguyen Thanh Lam, Director General of Viet Nam Television; Lam Thi Phuong Thanh, Permanent Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Vu Hai Quan, Permanent Deputy Minister of Science and Technology; Trinh Viet Hung, Permanent Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment; and Le Van Loi, President of the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences.

The ceremony was also attended by Pham Minh Tuan, President of the Viet Nam Publishing Association and Chairman of the National Book Awards Council, along with many other delegates, authors, translators, and representatives from publishing houses.

The ceremony also received congratulatory floral tributes from President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Speaking at the event, Trinh Van Quyet emphasised that throughout the nation’s history, culture, knowledge, and books have always played an especially important role in national development. Culture forms the spiritual foundation of society, knowledge is a vital resource for development, and books are the crystallisation of the intellect of both the nation and humanity, preserving and disseminating valuable ideas across generations.

He also affirmed that the Party and the state have consistently paid special attention to the development of culture, knowledge, and the publishing sector.

As Head of the Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, Trinh Van Quyet also called on management agencies, publishers, authors, translators, and those involved in book publishing to focus on effectively implementing several key tasks.

Author Lu Mai of Nhan Dan Newspaper was honoured with a C Prize for the work “Under the Vast Blue Sky.”

The 8th National Book Awards attracted the participation of 46 out of 52 publishing houses nationwide, with 397 titles and book series (512 volumes) submitted. The number of entries continued to rise compared with the previous edition, reflecting strong interest and active participation from publishing units, with 25 more titles and series and 57 more books than the 7th National Book Awards.
