To date, the province has invested in a relatively complete system of fishing ports, jetties, and storm shelters; built a system of sea dikes and breakwaters; and developed aquaculture, fisheries, and fisheries logistics services, including the development of fishing vessels, logistics service vessels, and vessels for purchasing seafood at sea, etc.

Great development potential

Go Cong Dong commune has approximately 2,500 hectares of clam farming area on tidal flats. According to the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Go Cong Dong commune, Nguyen Tuan Duy, in order to enhance the value chain of commercial clams towards sustainable development, the province, in coordination with the International Cooperation Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries (ICAFIS), OXFAM, and the People’s Committee of Go Cong Dong commune, has established a clam harvesting management area in Go Cong, according to the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

In November 2023, Go Cong Dong clams were awarded ASC certification. This is the “passport” for Vietnamese clams to be exported to many demanding markets such as Europe, Japan, etc. The clam farming area of Go Cong Dong commune in Dong Thap province became the 4th clam farming area in Vietnam and also the 4th clam farming area in the world to achieve this certification.

Besides fishing and clam farming, brackish water aquaculture is also a strength of Tan Phu Dong commune, with the largest brackish water aquaculture area in Dong Thap province, reaching over 6,300 hectares and a production of 44,000 tonnes.

According to Bui Thai Son, Secretary of the Tan Phu Dong Commune Party Committee: The commune focuses on developing aquaculture as a key economic sector, with shrimp farming being the main activity, and some residents investing in high-tech shrimp farming on over 140 hectares.

One of the province’s prominent coastal projects is the Gia Thuan 1 industrial cluster (Gia Thuan commune), with a scale of 50 hectares and a total investment of approximately 278 billion VND, invested by Tien Giang Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company.

The project was completed and began attracting secondary investors in 2020. To date, Gia Thuan 1 Industrial Cluster has attracted 10 investors, with an occupancy rate of approximately 70%; creating jobs for over 5,000 workers. Building on the success of Gia Thuan 1 Industrial Cluster, the investor is continuing to develop Gia Thuan 2 Industrial Cluster, with a scale of 50 hectares and a total investment of 391 billion VND.

Tran Hoang Huan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tien Giang Investment and Construction Joint Stock Company, stated: Gia Thuan 2 Industrial Cluster has attracted one secondary investment project; this investor has signed a memorandum of understanding to lease land, totalling 7.9 hectares, and is currently inviting secondary investors to increase the occupancy rate.
