Painter LE Lam (1931-2022), whose birth name was Vu Ai Quoc, studied at the Vietnam College of Fine Arts (now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts) during the resistance war against the French, under the guidance of painter To Ngoc Van. The lessons from To Ngoc Van’s Resistance Art class not only provided him with strong drawing skills in the wartime context but also inspired him with the spirit of realism in art.
He left a profound mark through his vivid and realistic war sketches. Throughout his career, Le Lam consistently upheld the view that realism in art is not merely about reproducing images but must also reflect the spirit and identity of the nation. His remarkable contributions are not only reflected in his vast body of work but also in the spiritual and historical values they convey.

He amassed a vast body of work thanks to his diligent work ethic, quick sketching ability, and unwavering spirit of immersing himself in the field throughout the years of resistance. He left behind thousands of battlefield sketches, propaganda paintings, and woodcut prints dedicated to the revolutionary cause.
"The battlefield sketches of Le Lam, in particular, and of artists in general, have created one of the most remarkable chapters in wartime sketching within contemporary Vietnamese art", affirmed Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association Luong Xuan Doan.
The exhibition "Eternal Spring" will run until March 20, 2025, at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
