The surgery was successful, although it was initially expected to have only a 50% chance of success.
The surgical team reported that the 32 year old man is now in stable condition, adding that Hai’s vital organs will take at least seven days to fully recover.
McKay McKinnon, a leading US doctor specialising in plastic surgery, was the main surgeon for the operation. He has successfully performed operations on similar tumors before.
Hai's tumor started growing when he was four years old and, in 1997, he underwent surgery to remove it and amputate his right leg below the knee.
However the tumor developed again in 2001, eventually growing to 90kg, making it very difficult for him to move.
The tumor is believed the largest of its kind recorded in Vietnam so far.
