The activity took place as part of the “For a Green Earth” campaign and in response to the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22). It highlighted the increasingly role of tech enterprises in environmental protection and sustainable development.
A persistent journey to protect nature
Gently placing a young sapling into the hole, forest ranger Ha Thi Quynh carefully pressed the soil around its base. Her face glistened with sweat, but her smile remained bright.
Now in her fourth year working for the Management Board of the Hang Kia–Pa Co Nature Reserve, Quynh and her colleagues frequently join reforestation programmes in coordination with charitable organisations. Unable to remember how many trees she has planted in the forests over the years, she says that planting each tree makes her feel happy and conveys many feelings.
“Our job is to coordinate with organisations and guide local people in tree planting,” she shared. “But I don’t see it as a ranger’s duty. It’s also a citizen’s responsibility to re-green the forests. I’m very happy to be planting these green shoots today with PanNature, continuing the journey of conserving nature.”
Launched in 2022 by the Centre for People and Nature (PanNature), the “Greening the Forest” initiative aims to restore 500 hectares of natural forest across the transitional area between Mai Chau District (Hoa Binh Province) and Van Ho District (Son La Province). This is a region of high biodiversity value, home to numerous rare flora and fauna, and a vital source of livelihood for the local Mong and Thai ethnic communities.
On May 16, PanNature and four leading technology businesses of HP Viet Nam, Synnex FPT, Digiworld Corporation, and Elite Technology JSC organised to plant trees in the framework of the “For a Green Earth” campaign.
The event attracted 183 participants, including representatives from the participating businesses, organising units, local authorities, and residents, who directly live, cultivate, and have a long-term attachment to the forest. The entire process of planting and caring for trees was technically guided by PanNature and forest rangers from Hang Kia - Pa Co Nature Reserve and supervised by the community, ensuring a high survival rate and long-term ecological efficiency.
According to Director of PanNature Trinh Le Nguyen the initiative is more than a tree-planting activity, it is a testament to the growing role of businesses in joining hands to protect the environment and restore nature.
“In the context of climate change and rapid ecosystem degradation, practical commitments and actions from the business community not only help realise sustainable development goals but also inspire the community and other stakeholders,” said Nguyen.
Covering 5,258 hectares at an altitude of 500–1,500 metres above sea level, Hang Kia–Pa Co Nature Reserve in Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province was established in 2000 to conserve karst forest ecosystems and many rare and precious endemic gymnosperm and animal species in the Northwest region. It is an important special-use forest of the province, plays a crucial role in gene preservation, biodiversity conservation, and watershed protection. The complex terrain and cool climate all year round create favourable conditions for the development of native tree species with ecological and economic value such as michelia tonkinensis, chukrasia tabularis, canarium tramdeum, and endemic bamboo varieties.
Developing sustainable technology in conjunction with nature conservation
The “For a Green Earth” campaign is an initiative launched by HP Viet Nam on the occasion of its 30th anniversary in the country with the goal of planting 30,000 trees to restore 50 hectares of natural forest in Hoa Binh Province in 2025. The planting on May 16 is the first planting under the campaign.
Evaluating this campaign, Sung A Vang, Deputy Manager of Hang Kia-Pa Co Nature Reserve shared: “Planting 30,000 trees not only contributes to restoring degraded forests but also helps in expanding the ecological buffer zone and reducing pressure on the conservation core. This is a clear demonstration of the social responsibility and green vision of participating businesses. We highly appreciate the approach based on community participation and technical support from professional organisations, ensuring conservation effectiveness and sustainable livelihoods for local people."
With a special campaign and clear messages, the units and organisations have shown their awareness and desire to demonstrate their responsibility in preserving nature and nurturing the future with specific and effective ways.
“After 30 years of accompanying Viet Nam’s development, HP has not only been associated with the technology industry but also wants to demonstrate its deep responsibility to the environment and the community. We believe that sustainable technology development cannot be separated from natural preservation. Today's forest planting campaign is part of our commitment to a greener future, where technology and nature coexist in harmony,” shared Nguyen Minh Duc, General Director of HP Viet Nam.
According to Duc, HP Viet Nam will continue to invest in sustainable technology by prioritising the use of recycled materials, saving energy and innovating to protect the environment. The enterprise also commits to continue to accompany the community and its partners in Viet Nam on the journey of sustainable and responsible development on a large scale.
In the context of increasingly serious climate change and ecosystem degradation, the proactive participation of the private sector, especially technology enterprises, is a positive signal showing a strong shift in thinking development. By planting a tree today, enterprises can contribute to laying the foundation for a future where the environment and technology develop together for humanity.
