Covering nearly 200 metres square in Trieu Duong hamlet, Tam Thanh commune, the construction of the flagpole started on June 17 at a cost of VND1.2 billion (US$55,000) with reinforced concrete. The 22.6 metre-tall flagpole has a view of the sea with its flag measuring 4 x 6 metres.
Deputy Secretary of Phu Quy district Youth union, Ta Ngoc Vien said that it was an honour for Phu Quy district to host in its area the national flagpole. The construction will be developed as a destination to educate locals and tourists on the country’s revolutionary tradition and maritime sovereignty , he pledged.
Pham Quynh, an elder from Trieu Duong hamlet said that the flagpole reaffirmed the national sovereignty, stressing that Phu Quy Islanders would rally efforts to make the district more prosperous.
The flagpole is one of seven being installed on outpost islands under a programme co-organised by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union’s Central Committee, the Vietnam Association of Students and the Bank for the Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV).
The programme was launched to encourage patriotism and raise the responsibility of the youth, particularly in Youth union members, in safeguarding the national sovereignty over its sea and islands.
