Pham Le Thao Nguyen qualifies for Chess World Cup 2025

Vietnamese female chess player Pham Le Thao Nguyen has qualified for the Chess World Cup 2025, as announced by the Vietnam Chess Federation.

The tournament is scheduled for November this year, bringing together the world’s finest chess players.

Grandmaster Le Quang Liem had preciously secured his spot in this prestigious tournament.

As such, Pham Le Thao Nguyen is now the second Vietnamese player to qualify for the Chess World Cup 2025.

At the Chess Olympiad last year, the Vietnamese women’s team finished 23rd overall, while the men’s team ranked 25th. Based on these results, Vietnamese chess was awarded two spots for the Chess World Cup 2025.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen’s official qualification came through her impressive performance at the 2024 Olympiad.

Currently, the Vietnamese chess team’s coaching staff is reviewing and selecting a male player with outstanding achievements from the Olympiad results to offer the remaining spot.

Meanwhile, Le Quang Liem’s World Cup spot was granted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) as a result of his position among the world’s top players.

Currently, Liem ranks 16th in the world, meeting the criteria for a special invitation to the Chess World Cup 2025.

Pham Le Thao Nguyen, now 34, is Vietnam’s top female chess player and currently holds the title of international master. She stands at 65th in the world women’s chess rankings.
