Hon Khoai Port is planned to be built on the eponymous island less than 15 kilometres off the coast of Ca Mau province.
According to the provincial leaders, Hon Khoai Port is located near the international sea route between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and the province has been calling for investment into the project.
However, the project requires massive funding, making it less attractive to investors.
Therefore, Ca Mau suggested the PM consider including the Hon Khoai Port project in the national investment promotion list for 2020 in order to support the province to look for capable investors.
Provincial leaders also suggested the Ministry of Transport soon formulate the port construction plan as a basis for execution.
Prime Minister Phuc said he agreed that the province will take the initiative to prepare the project, then the Ministry of Transport will provide the feedback in the spirit of calling for private investment.
At the meeting with the head of government, Ca Mau leaders also proposed upgrading the current runway of Ca Mau Airport from 1,500 metres to 2,400 metres long to accommodate larger aircraft so that the province can be better connected with further cities such as Hanoi and Da Nang.
Despite its potential, Ca Mau remains one of the slowest-growing provinces in the Mekong Delta.
The province is highly vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, its agriculture is heavily reliant on weather while its complex canal system makes investment and construction costlier than other regions.
