Seminar illuminates outstanding Cuban leader Fidel Castro Ruz’s life and career

The Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, in coordination with the Su That (Truth) National Political Publishing House, convened a seminar themed “Fidel Castro Ruz: From Childhood to Legend” in Ha Noi on August 12. The event commemorated the 100th birth anniversary of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz (August 13, 1926–August 13, 2026), an outstanding leader of the Cuban Revolution and a great friend and steadfast comrade of the Party, State, and people of Viet Nam.

In recent years, the Truth National Political Publishing House has collaborated with the Fidel Castro Ruz Centre in Cuba and relevant agencies to compile, edit, and publish a number of works on the great leader of the Cuban Revolution, including the publication “Fidel Castro Ruz: From Childhood to Legend” by journalist Vuong Xuan Nguyen.

The book transports readers back to Fidel’s early years, when his character was shaped, his ideals took root, and his mettle was gradually forged, offering a profound understanding of the man who left an indelible mark on history and became a global symbol and legend.

Speaking at the seminar, Nguyen Thai Binh, Deputy Director and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Truth National Political Publishing House, emphasised that the book’s core value lies in how, through the story of one individual, readers can glean broader insights into a generation, an era, and a country.

Through the book, readers can perceive the close connection between historical circumstances and personal development, between ideals and action, and between individual character and the destiny of a nation. These issues are not confined to the past, but continue to resonate profoundly today.

Nguyen Thai Binh affirmed that publishing and introducing works on Fidel Castro Ruz is significant not only for research, education, and culture, but also helps today's generations, particularly young people, cultivate a deeper understanding of Viet Nam's great friend, the history of the Cuban Revolution, and the values of international solidarity.

At the seminar, Cuban Ambassador to Viet Nam Rogelio Polanco Fuentes and journalist Vuong Xuan Nguyen, author of the book “Fidel Castro Ruz: From Childhood to Legend”, delivered candid and moving perspectives on the defining qualities and enduring values of Fidel Castro’s legacy that shaped his stature and lasting appeal across generations.

The speakers also highlighted the special affection Fidel Castro Ruz held for the Vietnamese people and the affection they held for him; the respect, protection, and continued strengthening of these enduring bonds by the peoples of the two countries over the years, which have forged the special, steadfast, and exemplary friendship between Viet Nam and Cuba, a rare relationship in international affairs. They also affirmed that the special bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two peoples have been and continue to be preserved and advanced by the two Parties, the two States, and the peoples of both countries in the current context.

The combination of a Cuban diplomat’s perspective and that of a Vietnamese author injected diverse approaches and a special emotional dimension to the seminar. The seminar “Fidel Castro Ruz: From Childhood to Legend” was not merely an occasion to remember a figure who has become part of history, but also to ensure that the values championed by Cuban leader Fidel Castro continue to live on in the present and serve to fortify the special Viet Nam–Cuba friendship for generations to come.
