More than 470 tonnes of rice grown in Cuba from Viet Nam’s OM5451 variety were handed over to Cuban partner GRANMAX at a ceremony in Havana on August 4, marking the first harvest delivered by Vietnamese agricultural company TBAgri under a joint Viet Nam–Cuba rice production project.
The handover agreement was signed by representatives of TBAgri and the Fernando Echenique Grain Agro-Industrial Company (GRANMAX), covering rice produced from OM5451 seeds cultivated by TBAgri in Yara town, Granma province, eastern Cuba.
The batch is the first shipment handed over by TBAgri to its Cuban partner and represents the outcome of the first large-scale production season under the “TBAgri connects Viet Nam and Cuba” joint rice production project.
According to TBAgri, the company cultivated 166 hectares during the 2025–2026 Autumn-Winter season, achieving an average yield of over 7 tonnes per hectare. The 2026 Summer-Autumn crop area was expanded to 246 hectares, with a projected yield exceeding 6.5 tonnes per hectare. Vietnamese rice varieties—such as OM5451, OM8017, and other high-quality strains—have demonstrated good adaptability to local soil and climatic conditions.
The handover of the first batch of over 470 tonnes of rice grown in Cuba to the Cuban side not only marks the initial success of the Thai Binh Group's agricultural investment project in the country but also demonstrates the effectiveness of cooperation between enterprises from both nations in the high-tech agricultural sector, thereby contributing to the realisation of the policy to strengthen economic and investment ties and ensure food security between Viet Nam and Cuba.
