Vietnam, RoK co-operate in sharing knowledge for socio-economic development

Results from the Republic of Korea (RoK) Knowledge Sharing Programme (KSP) —implemented in Vietnam in 2014 with the goal of sharing RoK’s development experience for the country’s socio-economic development — were shared at a conference held in Hanoi on March 11.

KSP was initiated in 2004 and Vietnam was among the first partner countries of the programme. The programme is part of bilateral co-operation between the two countries and has received positive reviews from international community.

KSP includes policy research, development consultation and capacity building to support the RoK’s partner countries in advancing their socio-economic development goals, institutional restructuring and national competitiveness based on the RoK’s experiences.

In 2014, experts studied issues in regional economic sustainable development policies in two important economic regions in Vietnam, the Red River Delta and the Southeast, focusing on the effectiveness of growth strategies; identification of policy instruments for environmental sustainability; industrial restructuring at the regional level; improving settlement work; and problems arising from rapid urbanisation.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen The Phuong highly appreciated KSP’s results in Vietnam, saying that this will be an effective reference tool during the policy making process and in realising socio-economic development goals in Vietnam.

The deputy minister said that through co-operation in knowledge sharing and other fields with the RoK, Vietnam has the opportunity to diversify sources of data and collect suggestions for appropriate socio-economic development policies.

RoK Ambassador in Vietnam Jun Dae Joo emphasised that KSP aims to build and strengthen capacity in management and policy-making for Vietnamese officials and government agencies and seek long-term development strategies in a number of important areas, including economic development, increasing industrialisation and exports, economic crisis management, human resource development, and education.

With the successes and lessons learned from the programme, the RoK committed to assist Vietnam in finding effective measures to facilitate the nation’s development, Jun Dae Joo, affirmed.

At the conference, experts recommended solutions to several issues such as housing shortages, traffic congestion, air pollution, and degradation of infrastructure in urban areas.
