People dedicated to community
Nguyen Van Dau, 69, was born into a peasant family with multiple children. He is the fifth child in the family, hence his nickname Nam Dau.
According to Co Van Sua, a local official, “Nam Dau is known for being frequently involved in public affairs that do not directly concern him. He is usually invited by commune leaders to deal with matters such as explaining and persuading households to hand over their land for important transport projects.”
Speaking with our correspondent, Nam Dau shared that he recently persuaded Vo Thi Hau to accept a compensation of 15 million VND to relocate a shrine of her family to make way for the construction of a road through the commune. Previously, she did not accept the compensation, saying that her family has many memories with this shrine.
Nam Dau said “But I told her that if everyone only thinks of their interests, then there would be no roads going through the commune, and there will be no economic, cultural and social development. After listening to my reasonable words, Hau accepted the compensation.”
Not long ago, Nam Dau succeeded in resolving the conflict between two neighbours in the commune over the installation of water pipes. “I showed them the location of the pipes and said this is a common water drainage passage. I told them to install pipes at the same time, right at the boundary between their two plots of land and no one would suffer loss. Both of them were happy with that plan and it’s done”, Nam Dau shared.
In Go Quao Commune, Danh Hung is well-known as a non-professional engineer who has built nearly 50 bridges crossing canals for local people. “Whenever he planned to build a bridge or house for charitable purposes, Hung first persuaded those in his family before reaching out to other donors. He does not seek to raise money, only looks for building materials and labour days”, said Duong Dep, a partner of Danh Hung.
Since 1985, Danh Hung has mobilised philanthropists and worked with local authorities to build 50 new bridges, each worth 40-100 million VND. For each bridge, he mobilised about 12-13 people, or even 50 people to help with the construction.

“Danh Hung is a hard-working, honest and kind-hearted man, who frequently helps poor people. The bridges designed and built by him have low costs but are very firm. For each finished bridge, he always publicises the funding details for the people to supervise,” said Luu Thi Hanh in the same commune.
Spreading good deeds
In response to the Prime Minister’s directive on strengthening and reforming mass mobilisation work, the former province of Kien Giang has recorded positive results in mass mobilisation efforts across the political system for the 2021-2030 period.
An outstanding example is the mass mobilisation movement at the provincial military command. In the past five years, the command has built dozens of houses for soldiers and poor households. Notably, it spent over 726 billion VND on Lunar New Year programmes to strengthen the civil-military relationship.
Implementing the nationwide programme to eradicate substandard housing, the provincial military command joined hands to build 400 homes for those in need of housing. Nearly 2,500 officials, soldiers and militia took part in the programme by contributing over 5,000 labour days.
Members of the provincial armed forces also donated part of their salaries, approached philanthropists and enterprises to donate appliances for new houses with a total sum of 450 million VND.
“Each house handed over to a household is not a new home helping them to overcome difficulties and escape poverty but also the sentiment of the armed forces towards the people”, said a representative of the provincial military command.
Thanks to effective mass mobilisation work and the participation of the whole political system, Kien Giang had completed the programme to remove substandard housing by the end of April. With strong determination and rapid pace, the province completed renovating and building 3,618 houses for poor and near-poor households.

“Good mass mobilisation skills, the determination of the entire political system, and active response from enterprises, philanthropists, soldiers, youth union members and people all contributed to the completion of the programme. This is a meaningful gift, reflecting the care of the Party and State, as well as the kind hearts of philanthropists, sectors and the armed forces”, said a provincial leader.
During the 2021-2025 period, the province has recognised thousands of good mass mobilisation models that have made a significant impact on the province’s socio-economic development.
To date, all the province’s communes have achieved the national standards on healthcare, while 58% of schools have met national standards. In addition, 73.5% of workers are now classified as skilled.
