Summer camp promotes students’ creativity in making robots

Young students have gathered at the GART Robotics Camp in Hanoi to learn about the robotics and automation industry.

Young students have the chance to learn about the robotics and automation industry at the GART Robotics Camp.

Taking place from July 24-28 at Hanoi-based American Centre, the event is run by GreenAms Robotics 6520 Club of the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted and sponsored by the American Centre and the US Embassy in Hanoi.

The camp is held free of charge to provide students ages 11-15 with an interesting experience in the field of science through a range of useful lessons and challenges in Robotics, thus promoting their passion for science and technology.

Those participating in the summer camp have a chance to learn about robotic assembling, programming and join-in interactive exercises and challenging tests offered by the organisers.

Students assembled robots with the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 set and programmed them to function on their own. Campers also learned about basic motion conduction structure, as well as programming skills needed to assemble wind turbines and racing cars.

According to US Embassy spokesperson Pope Thrower, the Robotics Camp is one among several of the American Centre’s programmes targeting young people in Vietnam to support their skill development in the field of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), as well as fostering their creative skills and future start-ups.

The programmes include students with science (Spark Labs), programming camp (BeeCodes), 3D printer design and installation, women with STEM and innovation, and startup programmes across the country, Pope Thrower added.

Nguyen Kim Chung, a 12^th grader at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School and head of the organising committee, said that young students do not need to have extensive knowledge about robotics when going to the camp. All lessons were designed to match campers' ages and its activities are also suitable to help spark a love of robotics and science among students.

GreenAms Robotics 6520 team was the first high school robotics club in Vietnam to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition in Australia and won the Rookie Inspiration Award. With their knowledge, young students from Hanoi-Amsterdam High School organised the summer camp to transmit their passion for science to youngsters who have the same interest.
