The ongoing effort to restore the identities of fallen soldiers, carried out with the utmost reverence, gratitude, and sense of responsibility, not only offers renewed hope of reunion and gives families a chance to find their loved ones after decades of waiting, but also stands as a vivid expression of the nation's tradition of gratitude and the responsibility of today's generation towards those who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence and freedom.

Nearly 1,400 sets of fallen soldiers’ remains have been recovered nationwide after four months of implementing the 500-day campaign to search for and recover soldiers whose burial locations or identities remain unknown.

In the central province of Quang Tri, teams are working tirelessly to upgrade the final resting places of fallen heroes, while intensifying efforts to locate, recover and collect DNA samples from martyrs’ remains so that they can be returned to their families as soon as possible.

Politburo member and Permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh and fallen heroes during visits to two national historical sites in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces on July 15, ahead of the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27).

Some mothers carried a lifelong anguish, never knowing where their children lay. More than 50 years after the war, a DNA collection and matching programme implemented by the Ministry of Public Security has helped restore the identities of many fallen soldiers and bring seemingly hopeless searches to an end.

More than 1,300 sets of fallen soldiers' remains have been recovered so far, including those from three mass graves, during the first 111 days of the nationwide 500-day campaign to accelerate the search for, recovery and identification of war martyrs, an official said on July 4.

As part of the 500-Day Campaign to accelerate the search for, recovery and identification of the remains of fallen soldiers, expanding international cooperation has been identified as one of the key measures to enhance the effectiveness of this important mission.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and a Government delegation on May 23 offered incense and flowers in tribute to fallen soldiers at the Truong Son National Martyrs Cemetery, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel special national relic site, and the Tam Co Cave relic site on Road 20 Quyet Thang during a working visit to the central province of Quang Tri.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra on April 15 chaired a meeting on the implementation of a 500-day campaign to accelerate the search, recovery and identification of fallen soldiers’ remains.

The war ended more than half a century ago, yet the pain and the longing for reunion remain deeply etched in the hearts of millions of Vietnamese families. Therefore, the search for, recovery, and identification of remains of fallen soldiers is not only a political task, but also a call from the heart — a sacred mission of the entire nation.

The trains carrying fallen soldiers from the South back to their northern homeland close half a century of longing for their families, turning Tet into a season of reunion.

A wide range of meaningful commemorative activities were held on July 24 to mark the 78th anniversary of Wounded and Fallen Soldiers’ Day (July 27, 1947 – 2025), embodying the Vietnamese moral tradition of “When drinking water, remember its source” and expressing deep gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s independence and freedom.

A delegation of the Party Central Committee, the State President, the National Assembly, the Government, and the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee laid wreaths at the monument to war heroes and martyrs on Bac Son street and paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum in Ha Noi on July 24 on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the War Invalids and Martyrs' Day (July 27, 1947–2025).
