The northern province of Thai Nguyen issued an emergency flood warning on October 7 evening as torrential rains triggered rising river levels that exceeded the extremely dangerous thresholds.

According to the provincial hydro-meteorological station, within the past 12 hours, major rivers and streams across Thai Nguyen have experienced severe flooding. By 17:00, water levels at several key monitoring stations had already surpassed alarm level 3 (extremely dangerous) and continued to rise rapidly.

Meteorologists said rising floodwaters could cause severe inundation along riverside areas and low-lying regions, while threatening construction sites and residential areas.

Local authorities have urged residents in high-risk zones to evacuate to safe locations and instructed emergency teams to maintain around-the-clock monitoring and carry out all necessary flood response measures to safeguard lives and property.

As of 19:30, torrential rains and flooding left three dead and three missing in the province.

More than 270 students were trapped at the Na Ri ethnic boarding high school after floodwaters isolated the area early on the day. Rescue teams and teachers worked together to move the children to safe places, managing to evacuate about 100 students by mid-afternoon.

The operation faced severe challenges due to fast-flowing water and blocked access roads. Emergency supplies of food and water were delivered to the students.

Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of all remaining students.
