Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves 6 dead, 26 injured in Viet Nam

Typhoon Kalmaegi has killed six people and injured another 26 in Viet Nam, while also causing extensive damage to infrastructure, houses and crops in central provinces, according to the national disaster management agency.

The Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention Department reported on November 8 that the typhoon had destroyed 333 houses and damaged another 32,000, with Gia Lai Province being the hardest hit.

Kalmaegi also sank and damaged 96 fishing vessels, destroyed 54,000 aquaculture cages, 3,800 hectares of rice and other food crops, and 7,400 hectares of other plants. Thousands of livestock and poultry were also swept away.

Regarding infrastructure, 31 power incidents were reported in the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi, causing power outages for more than 1.6 million customers, two-thirds of whom have since had electricity restored.

Transport infrastructure was also severely damaged, with multiple sections of highways and expressways suffering erosion and inundation, while the north-south railway in Dak Lak was cut off after parts of the track foundation were washed away.

Total losses were estimated at nearly 7.6 trillion VND (288.6 million USD), with Gia Lai suffering the most at 5 trillion VND, followed by Dak Lak with 2.2 trillion VND.
