Each phrase, bold and resolute, not only affirmed the sacred rights to freedom and independence of the nation but also stirred deep emotion and fervent pride in every Vietnamese heart for our nation’s resilient and indomitable traditions.

Listening to Uncle Ho’s words, amidst the lively music and vivid flags, we deeply appreciate the value of peace, independence, and the responsibility of safeguarding the fatherland for future generations.

Ba Dinh Square – The beating heart of history

From the early dawn on September 2, 2025, Ba Dinh Square was bustling with people. The stands were adorned with flags and flowers, the smiling faces of police officers and militia warmly greeting the crowds. Elderly people with silver hair wore traditional Ao Dai; veterans in faded blue uniforms; children with bright eyes full of excitement; all united by a current of proud emotion.

In the distance, above the main stage, the red flag with a gold star proudly flew. Amidst the radiant floral displays, the solemn sound of military marching music echoed.

The flag-raising ceremony commenced. The national flag was gradually hoisted to the top of the tall flagpole, fluttering proudly in the golden autumn sun. The gun salute thundered, the national anthem soared, blending with the chorus of tens of thousands of voices. The solemn and sacred atmosphere moved participants deeply.

The honour guard officers led the parade, standing in perfect formation, their steps strong and decisive. A large military band followed, with booming drums and trumpets beating like the nation’s heartbeat.

Units of the Viet Nam People’s Army – the key force defending the Fatherland – marched past the stage in sequence: officers, trainees, and infantry soldiers, each step perfectly in time, their gaze fixed forward, demonstrating discipline and elite capabilities.

The People’s Public Security units, a steadfast symbol of peace and security, proudly marched past the stage. The formidable military equipment columns symbolised Viet Nam’s military strength. As the last unit passed, waves of cheers rose like the sea, blending with the lively music.

The resonance of the Declaration of Independence

A loudspeaker boomed across the square: “All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The warm, clear voice of President Ho Chi Minh reverberated through the autumn sky, momentarily stilling the entire square.

At that moment, time seemed to stand still. It was as if we were hearing Uncle Ho read the Declaration once again amid the autumn of 1945.

Eight decades have passed, yet the sacred resonance of the Declaration remains as fresh as yesterday, etched into the minds of every Vietnamese citizen.

The loudspeaker played Uncle Ho’s voice again, reminding all: “Viet Nam has the right to be free and independent, and indeed has become a free and independent nation.”

These words not only echoed in Ba Dinh in 1945 but continue to resound today, strengthening the Vietnamese people’s resolve to stride confidently towards the future.

Not only did participating military and security forces, but the people present at Ba Dinh Square on September 2 morning were also an important part of this historic tableau.

Along both sides of the road, seats were packed. Each time a parade unit passed, applause and cheers rose incessantly. Many elderly attendees wiped away tears as they listened to the loudspeaker reading the Declaration of Independence.

Some families spanning three generations came: grandparents who fought in the resistance, parents who once wore military uniforms, and children who today grow up in peace.
