Video: High-quality, low-emission rice – A strategic pillar for 2026

Following turbulence in the global rice market, 2026 presents both opportunities and challenges for Viet Nam’s rice sector.

The focus is no longer on output volume but on a decisive shift towards high-quality, low-emission, and fully traceable rice — key factors in elevating value.

In 2025, rice exports reached 8.06 million tonnes, generating more than 4.1 billion USD in revenue, with an average price exceeding 510 USD per tonne. Several fragrant and specialty rice varieties commanded prices 10–25% higher than ordinary rice, demonstrating that the strategy of shifting from quantity to quality is yielding tangible results.

According to experts from the International Rice Research Institute, circular production models involving the collection and reuse of rice straw can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30%, while increasing farmers’ incomes by up to 24%. In January 2026, exports totalled around 600,000 tonnes, with an average price of over 616 USD per tonne, reflecting the trend towards higher value.

The project to develop one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta is expected to create a breakthrough, strengthening the Vietnamese rice brand within the global supply chain.
