Among the highlights were the VN-PQSign post-quantum digital signature algorithm, the attainment of Common Criteria EAL 5+ security certification, and the establishment of a joint advanced cryptography research laboratory.
These developments represent a strategic milestone in Viet Nam’s pursuit of technological security self-reliance. The VN-PQSign algorithm, built on hash functions, emphasises safety, reliability, and resilience against quantum computing threats that could undermine traditional cryptographic systems.
Dr Nguyen Quoc Toan, Director of the Institute of Cryptography Science and Technology, underscored the Commission’s proactive response, transforming advanced mathematical knowledge into a “shield” for national digital infrastructure.
Major General Ho Van Huong, Deputy Head of the Government Information Security Commission, affirmed that cryptography has long been the “lifeblood” of Party and State leadership. Today, he noted, it safeguards national sovereignty in cyberspace – the “fifth domain”.
He praised VN-PQSign and the VIASM joint laboratory as embodiments of innovative thinking, aligned with Politburo Resolution 57/NQ-TW on science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to “Make in Viet Nam” cryptography: achieving full mastery of algorithms, processes, and standards while rejecting foreign dependency. The new laboratory will serve as a bridge between Vietnamese and international expertise, training specialists and preparing upgrades to post-quantum systems for Party, State, and key socio-economic sectors.
In parallel with these advances, Vietnamese technology company MK Smart has achieved a significant breakthrough in the international market. MK Smart secured Common Criteria EAL 5+ certification for Lotus GovID (decision BOE-A-2026-1037), built on Lotus OS. Recognised under the CCRA in more than 30 countries – including the US, the UK, Germany, and Japan – it rivals global leaders such as Thales and IDEMIA.
The tripartite collaboration between the Viet Nam Government Information Security Commission, VIASM, and MK Smart exemplifies the mobilisation of national and international resources for large-scale cryptography research and product development. MK Smart’s achievement reinforces Viet Nam’s stance on technological self-reliance, converting mathematics and cryptography into a robust digital shield.
